4 things you can learn from Don Jazzy
Michael Collins Ajereh, better known as Don Jazzy, is a Nigerian record producer, singer, songwriter, and entrepreneur. He co-founded the now defunct record label Mo’ Hits Records in 2004. Following the closure of the aforementioned record label, Don Jazzy set up Mavin Records on May 8, 2012. We all know the impact Don Jazzy has had on the music industry. No music producer has been able to replicate what he does. No matter who you are, if you come in contact with him, your life, music career changes.
Here are four things we can all learn from him;
He is a team player
From the days of Solek crew band to JJC crew to Mohits to Mavin, Don Jazzy has always been a team player. He surrounds himself with a team all the time. He understands the power in numbers. There is a saying, “if you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go with people”. That is the mantra Don Jazzy follows. He works with a team most of the time. Most people think you can do it alone. Just take for example the Mavin team, Don Jazzy has two other producers working with him, who does that? Become a team player, don’t try to do everything alone.
For years, people did not know who and what was inside Don Jazzy’s head. During the Mohit days, he remained in the background, doing the work. He hardly granted interviews, he just wanted to do what he loves, which is music. Don Jazzy has built a legacy that can never be forgotten over the years. Among those who started music at the same time, he happens to be one of the few remaining. He was able to do this by been disciplined and consistent. Build silently, you don’t have to get the whole world to see you when you are still building. The time to say your narrative is coming.
Be content with what you have
From the days of working as a security official at McDonalds, he remained content. He felt no matter what he has, he just needs to have enough for tomorrow. Which is why is a very big team player. It is only Don Jazzy that has his prodigies still working under him. Every other record label has either lost artistes under them or closed down. Remain content with what you have and don’t live your life by other people’s standard. That is the singular difference between Don Jazzy and Dbanj.
14 years down the line, Don Jazzy is yet to have a song attributed to him as a single. How deep can that be? Don Jazzy should be a course studied in Universities, just explain to me how he has been able to remain fulfilled without necessarily been at the forefront. Don Jazzy has made people you would consider as a “nobody” into somebody. We can not write about the music industry without honorably mentioning him, that is the true power of selflessness and impact. You don’t have to always think about yourself all the time, think about others and how you can help them succeed. This is where true happiness lies.
Don Jazzy has made a tremendous impact in many lives, a role model to many young people. One day someone will be brave enough to do a movie about his life.
