Sports Wrap-Up: Its 3 Days to Russia 2018

We cannot keep our cool anymore because it is just 3 days to the 21st World Cup tournament to be hosted by Russia and Nigeria is one of the team to participate in this awesome event.

Last weekend was quite eventful in the world of sports from the Nigerian Premier Football League to World Cup Preparation to the Roland Garros and NBA Playoffs.

NPFL

Michael Ibe’s 76th-minute strike for 10-man Akwa United sealed a 1-0 away victory against Yobe Desert Stars on a weekend in which league leaders Lobi Stars were defeated.

Junior Lokosa

Junior Lokosa’s 19th league goal of the season saved Kano Pillars’ blushes, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Rivers United at home.

Goals in each half from Uche John and Joseph Osadiaye sealed a comfortable 2-0 home win for Enyimba against Katsina United, a win which moves the People’s Elephant into fifth-place, level on 37 points with Plateau United and Niger Tornadoes.

Lobi Stars, Awka United, Kano Pillars, Plateau United and Enyimba all lead the top half of the Log respectively while sunshine stars, Yobe stars and Heartland complete the bottom three of the log.

3 points were deducted from both Sunshine stars and Heartland FC for breaking of the NPFL rules and framework.

The league will proceed will be on break on till after the world cup.

World Cup

Rumor has it that there has been a huge rift between the Super Eagles captain, John Mikel Obi and Vice captain Ogenyi Onazi. This rumor has since gained some atom of truth as Nigeria’s Technical Advisor Gernot Rohr has resolved to cancel the position of vice-captain in the Super Eagles as it is believed to be one of the issues militating against the team.

Mikel remains is the captain and have been told to hand over the captain’s band to the most senior player on the pitch whenever he is being substituted.

Despite poor outings in Nigeria’s 3 world cup warmup friendlies, Rohr has said that the team will be ready in time for their first match against Croatia on Saturday. He also said

“We will take it one match at a time. I love this group because we know how to rise to the occasion together. Nigeria will be ready for Croatia,” Rohr told NFF website.

The Super Eagles are also the lowest ranked African side at the world cup and also the lowest ranked team in their group which also has Croatia, Iceland and Argentina.

NBA

The Golden State Warriors have in Grand Style. Game 4 of the 2018 NBA Finals was a must-win for the Cleveland Cavaliers to extend the series to a fifth game to stave off an embarrassing sweep. The Golden State players spoke about their desire to close out the Finals as quickly as they could, and they did just that in impressive fashion.

The Warriors won Game 4, 108-85, to beat the Cleveland Cavaliers as they clinched the NBA Championship. This was their third title in four seasons and their second championship on the bounce.

For King James this was the 9th final in which he played in, having won just 3 out of it. He confessed later during his speech to have played most of the series with a broken wrist.

He had “self-inflicted” it in a fit of pique when he smacked a whiteboard in the visitors’ dressing room at Oracle Arena after Cleveland’s overtime loss in the series-setter, an outcome driven at least in part by some teammates’ mistakes and an arcane wrinkle in the NBA’s replay rules regarding block/charge fouls.

Simona Halep was beaming as she reflected on her first major triumph – a unanimously popular victory. With the “beautiful” Coupe Suzanne-Lenglen trophy by her side.
Sometimes history finds a way to repeat itself with the addition of an unforeseen quirk, to fashion the happiest of new chapters. So it was for Simona Halep in the final of Roland-Garros 2018.

At last, at long last, Simona Halep is a Grand Slam champion.

In the men’s category Rafael Nadal beat Dominic Thiem 6-4 6-3 6-2 with the sort of regal dominance he has now shown 11 times at Roland-Garros. The only thing that overcame him on the day was emotion. As he held the Coupe des Mousquetaires aloft to show off to a packed Court Philippe-Chatrier, his eyes brimmed.

It was incroyable, he said
