4 things you’ve got to do in your twenties
Life gets more complex as we grow older; We have no one to fall back on. Infact, every decision we make has a repercussion, either positive or negative. To keep up, there are a few things you have to do to secure your future.
Here are 4 things you must do in your twenties;
Establish career goals
There is a saying, “ If you fail to plan, you plan to fail”; there is nothing so real as that statement. You have to figure out what you want to do and plan for it. Don’t join the bandwagon of people who think that a career will be handed to them. To achieve success in your twenties, you have to take the time to think deep and hard. Once you have figured it out, you can now act on your plans. If you get stuck, go back to your plan. Give room for a pivot, as your plans might not work as such. Please do not deceive yourself, if your plans are not working, feel free to make a new one or update the existing one.
Try “side hustles”
We should all have a “side hustle” outside our careers. Yes, even you with the great job. You should try a hustle today. It has the potential to not only enrich your life financially and mentally, but can also expand your horizons. I advise that your chosen “ side hustle” be something you’re passionate about. I believe it pushes you outside your comfort zone, and forces you to develop a new set of skills that you are unlikely to get at your “day job”. This ultimately gets you to where you want to be, with the possibility of finding a more meaningful job.
Don’t allow your professional growth to stall in your twenties! Take up a side hustle and accelerate your growth.
Build meaningful relationships
As a young chap in Nigeria, your social capital and network is what will keep you steady as you climb the success ladder. There will be times when you would not have cash or liquid assets to get to the next level. At this point, this is when you draw out from your social bank. All opportunities are attached to people. Investing in meaningful relationships during your twenties is key. No man makes it alone.
Invest in yourself
A mistake we make is that, we assume that since we were able to go through the four walls of the University, we are made and need not invest in ourselves anymore. Since our parents stopped investing in us, some of us have not taken any action towards investing in ourselves. Don’t wait for your parents, employer or anyone in particular to invest in you. Take charge of your personal development by setting aside some money in your budget for this singular purpose. Buy books, take courses and utilize free resources. Find career sites to follow in your industry. Do not be too broke to invest in yourself. Enjoy the process, the more you invest in yourself, the more expensive you get.
