Past Nigerian Football Stars: Julius Aghahowa
In today’s episode, we will be featuring a former Nigerian Star who was born in one of the states in the South-South Region of Nigeria.
Julius Efosa Aghahowa is a former player of the Super Eagles of Nigeria who was born on the 12th of February 1982 in Benin. He was popularly known for his pace and back-flips during his playing days.
Julius is married to Ijeuru Aghahowa and is blessed with a daughter Isabelle who made a breakout into Nollywood with her role as a twin in a Uche Jumbo movie.
Julius Aghahowa started his football career with a local police team before moving to Bendel Insurance in Benin. He later got a deal with Esperance in Tunisia before moving over to play for Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine.
In the middle of the 2000–01 season, Aghahowa transferred to Shakhtar Donetsk
In 2007 Julius signed for Wigan at an undisclosed fee. He made 20 appearances for Wigan but could not score a single goal for the club and later left in 2008 to turkey to play for Kayserispor.
He made 29 appearances for Kayserispor scoring 6 goals before making intentions known that he would love to play for his former club Shakhtar Donetsk which he eventually did.
On his return to Shakhtar Donetsk he could not get a regular first team place as he was later loaned out.
He later announced his retirement from football in April 2013.
Julius Aghahowa played 32 matches for the Super Eagles scoring 14 goals for the Nigerian national team and including his famous goal at the 2002 World Cup against Sweden. He was also part of the squad that featured in the 2000 summer Olympics
