On Sports Today !
I am so happy that the International break is over and the Leagues will resume this weekend. In case you do not know, the NBA season for 2018/2019 started with classic matches. Let me give you a quick summary of the major talking points in sports.
Nigeria leap to the top of Group E as South Africa play out a goalless draw
With South Africa playing out a goalless draw with Seychelles in an earlier Group E fixture, Nigeria needed to secure a win against Lybia to give them a top spot on the table.
Things were going to plan as Nigeria took a two-goal lead in the space of 18 mins of the match but soon relaxed and gave up that lead after a goalkeeping error from Francis Uzoho and a collapse in the midfield.
Despite the scare, Odion Ighalo came to the rescue of the team with his composed left-footed winning shot in the 81st minute of the match. That goal made it his 5th goal having scored a hat-trick on Saturday.
Only Four Teams Have Qualified for AFCON 2019
Madagascar qualified for their first-ever Nations Cup after securing a win against Equatorial Guinea at home on Tuesday. They were joined by Segenal, Egypt, and Tunisia as they all came out with victories in their matches.
Ivory Coast, Gabon, and South Africa all have a lot of work to do as they also seek qualification for the tournament.
Germany was shocked by their 6th loss in a calendar year.
Germany does not seem to have that winning formula we all know them for as they will not be appearing in the Nations League Finals after their loss to France. They also face the prospect of relegation from Group A. Maybe Coach Low just needs to introduce a different formula into the team.
Liverpool hit hard with International Injuries
Liverpool will resume with a lighter striking force as Centre-back Virgil van Dijk, midfielder Naby Keita and forwards Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah all returned to the club’s Melwood training ground early to aid their respective recoveries.
Danny Rose, Antonio Rudiger, Danilo, and Sokratis Papastathopoulos also suffered injuries while on international duties for their countries.
Warriors and Boston Celtics begin the season in Terrific style
The new season officially kicked off last night with the Golden State Warriors securing a win against the Oklahoma City Thunder in a 108 – 100 score. Stephen Curry finished 32 PTS, 8 REB, and 9 AST while Dennis Schroder finished with 21 PTS, 9 REB, and 6 AST. My only major concern was for Russ Westbrook but the team seemed to do just fine without him.
The Celtics also came to the party as they swept aside the 76ers in a 105 – 87 score. Jayson Tatum definitely stood out for his team as he finished with 23 PTS, 9 REB and 3 AST while Ben Simons of the 76ers finished with 19 PTS, 15 REB and 8 AST.
