Word on the Street: Access Bank acquires Diamond Bank, what Toke Makinwa hears instead of “Able God” and more

Hello friends, hope you had a productive Monday. Christmas is just around the corner and many people are already having a Detty December with all the concerts and fun attractions. How’s your December going? Let me know in the comments section.

Now, to Word on the Street!

Access Bank acquires Diamond Bank

If you’re a Diamond Bank customer, from yesterday, the ball had been set rolling for your bank to be acquired by Access Bank.

According to reports, the proposed merger would involve Access Bank acquiring the entire issued share capital of Diamond Bank in exchange for a combination of cash and shares in Access Bank via a Scheme of Merger.

Gist has been flying around that Diamond Bank had been having some issues in the recent past. Last week, the bank reportedly dropped its international operating licence to” focus on national operations following capitalisation issues.”

According to a report by Bloomberg, following the announcement of the merger, the shares of both banks have risen significantly and the merger will make Access Bank the largest by retail customers in Africa.

The merger is expected to be finalised in the first half of 2019.

Yesterday was President Muhammadu Buhari’s birthday

Yesterday, December 17, President Buhari celebrated his 76th birthday at the State House in Abuja.

According to a tweet through Bubu’s official handle, he was “ambushed” with a surprise celebration by his fans. Yes, Bubu got a surprise party on his birthday, what did you get on yours?

Anyway, fans from all over the world sent him birthday wishes, including his PDP rival Atiku Abubakar and the party itself as was seen in the birthday wishes sent from the PDP Nigeria official Twitter handle.

I’ll join my own to it and say “Happy belated birthday Bubu, you’re now 76 years old, maybe consider retiring next year? Thank you.”

Update on ASUU strike

It continues. Yesterday, the representatives of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) met with federal government delegates for the umpteenth time to discuss the ongoing strike action commenced by the union on November 4.

According to a report by Premium Times, the ASUU reps walked out of the meeting.

Labour Minister Chris Ngige however expressed optimism that the strike would be called off soon.

He said three demands by the union would be considered; salary shortfall, university revitalisation and earned allowances of lecturers but going by the story of ASUU delegates walking out of the meeting, the government’s offer wasn’t good enough.

#EndAsuuStrike please.

Apparently “Able God” sounds like “Ebuka”

Yesterday, Toke Makinwa, Nigerian OAP and author tweeted that whenever she heard Chinko Ekun’s hit song “Able God”, she thought she hears “Ebuka”. What???

The song is titled Able God and those words w said 992 times in the song (don’t ask me how I arrived at this number).

Anyway, Aunty Toke was ridiculed on Twitter throughout yesterday for spreading such dodo (lies) and Ebuka has been trending ever since.

“Ebuka, shower your blessings, we want this money…”. No, doesn’t work.

Have a great Tuesday.
